I'm sure everyone's seen the news that Stuart Cable, formerly of the Stereophonics has died. Some Glitzinetters (particularly any in South Wales!) will perhaps recall his stint in King Catwalk - an extract from his autobiography regarding this period in his (pre)career can be found at www.anthonybunko.com/ (click 'books', then on the cover of 'Demons And Cocktails').

he was in the glam band - NailBombz as well for a couple of gigs back around 92 I think... he sang for them... they also recorded the demo Raw Sex for Breakfast...
those were the days - RIP Cable!

They get mentioned in another extract - in fact to make things easier I'll just post them up!
"My first attempt at stardom was singing with a band called Nail Bomb. Eat your heart out, Elvis; be scared, Bonnie: Cable was coming. True to form, I was fucking terrible. And, to add insult to injury, I looked worse. My shirt kept falling over my shoulder, exposing my white bare flesh. Last year, some girl found a picture of the gig and used the photo of me in a quiz in my local pub. No one knew who it was. Someone thought I was Janice Joplin during her ugly period. One regular actually got sick, while the landlord of the pub joked about putting the picture above the mantelpiece to keep the kids from going near the fire."
Before the phonics
"I grew my hair even bigger, squeezed into a pair of spandex pants and a glittery top, put on some black eyeliner and became the drummer in a glam-rock band aptly named King Catwalk. We were a cross between Poison, Mötley Crüe and, unfortunately, a little too much Spinal Tap. For some obscure reason, we played most of our gigs up in the North of England. I’m still not sure why. It wasn’t as if the people there were into that type of music more than those in any other part of the country. In fact, most of the gigs we played were in front of four or five people at the most. I think it was because we looked so ridiculous when we came out on stage that we subconsciously decided to gig as far as possible away from where we lived. It was gruesome at times. There’s nothing worse, or funnier, than trying to get ready in a dressing room the size of a toilet, with five guys who had larger-than-life hairdos covered in lacquer and wearing platform boots. It was a fuckin’ safety hazard for starters: one match would have ignited the lot of us. And perishing in some bizarre backstage fire accident was probably the only way we would have ever ended up famous anyway: ‘Here lies the syringed hair of King Catwalk – RIP. God forgive them – they know not what they did.’"

I tried digging out my Katwalk demos this morning, but goodness knows where they are. I was sharing a flat with Katwalk guitarist, Steve, when Cable was in the band. Cable and co. would pick him up every Sunday morning for band practice. Naturally it was Cable who was given the honours of belting out 'SSSTTEEEVVVEEE!!!!' through the letterbox.
Have been in touch with BBC Wales, and thrown my hat in the ring to produce his documentary, but I imagine there'll be quite a few filmmakers up for it.
Sad times.

I didn't get it. BBCW are doing it in-house.
Sadly, I'm now privy to everything that happened that night. The press ain't (yet, not until the tox report is public domain) but it doesn't make me feel any better.

Unlucky Darren - By the sounds of it... it won't be easy viewing then?

Knowing the BBC (producing a doc on one of their own), it'll be a feel-good smilefest. Knowing what I know about his final night alive, and who he spent it with, I could easily get commissioned by MTV for something a bit more tabloid car crash. It would mean making a lot of enemies, though, and frankly, I've got enough on my plate.
